This video explains examples of figurative language (similes, metaphors, hyperboles, personification and allusions.)

In ELA class, students work with figurative language throughout the year in various class novels, poems and isolated worksheets. 

An understanding of figurative language is important because it helps students understand the author's purpose, make inferences that stretch beyond "right there" details in the text and increases the understanding of mood and tone. 

Students can also improve their writing skills with an understanding of how to use figurative language. 

Worksheets for practice on inferencing. Grade level ranges are included.
